WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano (D-Calif.) officially unveiled the Committee’s Veterans Reproductive Healthcare Survey as part of the Committee’s larger effort focused on reproductive healthcare access for America's veterans.

The survey will gather feedback about how veterans have used reproductive care at VA in the past, and the improvements they want to see implemented at VA.

“As the Committee continues its work on improving veterans’ access to reproductive healthcare at VA, this survey gives veterans nationwide a chance to share their story,” said Chairman Takano. “These topics are deeply personal and may be difficult to share outside of veterans’ conversations with their medical providers. I encourage all veterans who have sought reproductive care at VA to share their experiences. The responses, which can remain anonymous, will help the Committee as it develops equitable healthcare policies for all who served.”

BACKGROUND: The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the largest integrated healthcare network in the United States. Millions of veterans live in states that have already issued or plan to issue bans or restrictions on abortion, contraceptives, fertility treatment, and other reproductive healthcare services. VA has the most restrictive abortion policy of any federal healthcare system, including the Department of Defense, Indian Health Service, and Bureau of Prisons. VA does not provide abortion counseling or abortion services, and additionally, VA also cannot provide the full spectrum of care for miscarriage and other pregnancy complications.
